MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates and oversees Point of Care Testing performed within the hospital and off-site hospital department locations.  May include oversight of multiple hospitals.
  • Provides technical oversight for all POC testing and instrumentation.  Assists supervisor with technical staff development including competency and coaching, correcting performance as needed.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Laboratory, Nursing, and other Diagnostic Service areas.
  • Maintains POC Quality Assurance program for Ancillary departments outside of the lab, including orientation, training, and competencies.
  • Coordinates and oversees the Laboratory’s Quality program.
  • Reviews, prepares, and shares quality data with site leadership and/or site quality committee, and may participate in monthly/quarterly quality meetings, as appropriate.
  • Researches and identifies quality improvement opportunities and indicators for the department.
  • Oversees proficiency testing surveys appropriate for extent of testing performed at the site
  • Participates in evaluation review of proficiency testing and ensures that any problems identified after results received are resolved appropriately, including coaching and addressing performance concerns as needed.  
  • Coordinates and monitors programs that ensure that all Regulatory Agency requirements are met.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

License/Registration/Certification Required: Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification.

American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) or equivalent

Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, or other related field.

Experience Required: Typically requires 3 years of experience as a working laboratory professional.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Maintains current knowledge of all technical aspects of the specialty and any computer integration.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.  
  • Proficient in the use of laboratory computer systems, including use of word processing programs and spreadsheets. 
  • Thorough knowledge of statistics and ability to apply statistical rules/analysis to laboratory decision-making processes.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to successfully handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated organizational ability, attention to detail, and accuracy.
  • Ability to work well in stressful situations, maintaining professional composure at all times.
  • Ability to consistently handle multi-tasking, meet established deadlines, and recognize assignments that may be delegated.
  • Ability to build and support a highly cohesive and functional team.
  • Maintains knowledge of all accrediting agency standards to ensure compliance.
  • Maintains current knowledge of and complies with the contents of all pertinent policy and procedure manuals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Frequently required to lift up to 10 lbs. and occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs. 
  • Must be able to sit, stand or walk most of the workday. 
  • Will be exposed to the following hazards: mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radiations, reagents, and infectious agents.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to work a flexible schedule, which may include alternate site assignment.
  • May be required to wear lab coats, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
