ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH TECHNICIAN

2026 Hiring Range:  $23.90 - $27.15 per hour

Position Summary and Job Duties

The Environmental Health Tech position requires professional level administration and community outreach.  This position conducts compliance inspections for implementation of governing health codes and ordinances as well as preservation of the community’s health and safety, and conducts environmental field sampling for various state agency contracts.  This position reports to the Environmental Sanitarian Supervisor.  Job duties include:

Animal Investigations

  • Perform animal bite and rabies control investigations
  • Instruct animal owners to follow proper rabies protocol and provide information on how to deal with an animal suspected of rabies
  • Work with local animal hospitals and Community Service Officers
  • Check households on animal nuisance complaints and animal ordinance violations
  • Conduct yearly inspections of animal kennels at licensed establishments
  • Create detailed and accurate reports of inspections and investigations

Water Testing

  • Perform bacteria, E. coli, and nitrate tests on water samples
  • Collect beach and public well water samples and perform various lab water tests
  • Collect daycare water samples to be tested for lead

Operational Responsibilities

  • Maintain the Weights and Measures program for the City of Kenosha
  • Check gas stations to certify the accuracy of their gas pumps
  • License and inspect Tourist Rooming Houses for compliance with state statutes
  • Inspect mobile home communities and body art establishments for compliance with state statutes
  • Provide radon information and remediation techniques to the public
  • Monitor environmental section phone, maintain log, and distribute as appropriate
  • Continually seek out quality improvement opportunities to refine/enhance the diversity, equity, and inclusion of programs and services
  • Participate in broader divisional orientation, training, and staff development functions including all staff meetings and Community Health Improvement Planning (CHIP)
  • Ensure adherence and compliance to the policies and procedures of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regarding protected health information
  • Investigate health hazard complaints and determine best course of action for remediation

Job Requirements, Education, Training and Experience

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Some college or technical training coursework in environmental science, biology, or similar field

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Prior experience or knowledge of environmental health
  • Prior experience or knowledge of laboratory sampling techniques
  • Bi-lingual proficiency (English/Spanish)
  • Or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

Other Job Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Availability to perform occasional weekend and evening work as required
  • Availability to perform other work as required or assigned including, but not limited to, a 24/7 response during public health emergency situations and disease outbreak investigations

  • The position involves heavy physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Constant walking, dynamic balance, forward level reaching, and simple grasping; frequent sitting, standing, static balancing, and repetitive bending, squatting, and kneeling; and occasional climbing of stairs while lifting/carrying 50 pounds
  • Will occasionally work in an outdoor environment with exposure to weather-related heat and cold, rain, wind, and other elements
